The Emerald Ash Borer
The invasive species of beetle, known commonly as the Emerald Ash Borer is waging an all-out war on United States native Ash trees. The Ash tree has been commonly used as a street and shade tree all across cities, streets, neighborhoods, and parks providing the beetles an all-you-can-eat dinner buffet with very few natural predators to stop them. Not only is the Ash tree a beautiful shade tree used in green infrastructure but thriving as well in the woodworking industry with uses for tool handles, baseball bats, cabinets, furniture, and flooring. Creating a monitoring and management system of control for this invasive species has proven difficult yet paramount. The Emerald Ash Borer has been both devastating as well as pioneering; by initiating immense research focuses, studies, litigation, and management techniques against this extremely invasive species in a quick amount of time and setting a precedent for invasive species management in general.
